The fourteen-hour flight from Chicago to Shanghai almost did me in, but the opportunity to see a city reinventing itself and to interview young Chinese students who want to continue their education in the United States has been rejuvenating. Thus far I have survived using chopsticks, tasting jellyfish, following street merchants as they wind their way through stalls and shops to bring me to their favored seller, and long van rides. I have also been the recipient of kindness beyond expectation from the natives of this incredible land.
Below are pictures of the “new” side of the river in Shanghai and a typical shop front in the Bund District on the “old” side of the river, which houses the financial district as well.
Tomorrow it’s off to Beijing and the Great Wall. I’ll report in again from there.
