The Technology Committee, consisting of teachers, administrators, and trustees, met recently to consider responses to the surveys sent to teachers, parents, and students and to make a decision about classroom tools for 2016-17.
The surveys tell us that our one-to-one device program has been very successful in helping students become better organized and more productive. We are pleased with that result and hope that we can continue to grow the program to make teaching and learning more efficient and exciting for everyone in the classroom.
To that end, the Technology Committee has determined that we need to eliminate iPads and all other tablets as options. Students who have tried to use them this term have all too often found them difficult to manage, and teachers have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to help those students troubleshoot. Additionally, the Lower and Middle School groups have recommended a single-platform solution.
For the school year 2016-17, then, students in grades 4-8 will need a MacBook laptop for school, and students in grades 9-12 may use a laptop or chromebook of their choice. Minimum specifications for these machines are as follows:
- MacBook & MacBook Air: 11″ Screen, i3 Processor, 4GB RAM, 128GB Hard Disk Drive or Solid State Drive
- Other Laptops (IBM-compatible, etc.): 11″ Screen, i3 Processor, 4GB RAM, 128GB HDD or SSD
- Chromebook: 11″ Screen, Intel Celeron Processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD
Carlisle will offer very reasonable lease agreements for chromebooks and refurbished MacBooks next school year. We will finalize those figures early in 2016 and ask you then to let us know if you would like to exercise a lease option for next school year.
