As if last year’s “threepeat” victory in the state championship wasn’t enough, the Lady Chiefs kept their winning streak alive this year earning their fourth consecutive state championship title. Led by Coach Mancino Craighead, the Chiefs beat Timberlake Christian in a close 35-31 victory. Craighead has been the head coach for the Lady Chiefs for the past nine years, bearing witness to their historic success.
“The fourth title was so very bittersweet,” said Craighead. “It was the best feeling in the world to win the fourth in a row because I know we worked so hard for it. To think I will never have the chance to coach this group again is the hard part! I’m going to miss them all!”
Five seniors will be graduating this May, leaving a void of talent and leadership on the team. But Craighead is not concerned. “Next season is next season,” he said. “I think we will continue to be competitive. When you have a successful program such as we do it attracts others. Hopefully we can attract a few! As for now, I’m just enjoying the moment and taking some time to relax and enjoy the celebrations!”
