We invite our families to partner with Carlisle Lower School as we guide our students to “stand out, step up, and lead.” We have Lower School campuses in Martinsville and in Danville. The Lower School experience begins when a child turns two years old and continues through fifth grade. The Lower School experience is rich with activities beyond the classroom. The students participate in a variety of field trip opportunities in each grade. The curriculum is supplemented with instruction in the foreign language, technology, art, drama, creative movement, music, band, library, research, guidance and physical education. A science laboratory and computer laboratory are available to students in Kindergarten through fifth grade. Carlisle teachers engage students through the integration of technology, such as iPads, Promethean ActivBoards and Promethean ActivVotes daily to enhance and support the learning experience.

The Lower School experience is rich with activities beyond the classroom. The students participate in a variety of field trip opportunities throughout their Lower School experience. Day trips include visits to a local pumpkin patch, The Virginia Safari Park, Virginia Natural Bridge and Luray Caverns, and the Chapel Hill Morehead Planetarium. Overnight field trip destinations include Appomatox and Busch Gardens.
At Carlisle, the arts serve a unique purpose in the educational development of each student. Classes strive to encourage and nurture each child’s natural creativity and curiosity. Students in the first through fifth grades participate in their own drama/musical production each year. Weekly music classes focus on musical awareness, sensitivity, vocal development and fine motor skill. They also take part in creative movement classes. Visual Arts classes are available in preschool through fifth grade. Classes use a variety of media, such as acrylics, crayon, pastels and clay, to refine individual styles. Hands-on instruction, integrated with proper art terms and tools, serves to explain each project and its purpose. The early introduction of art history helps the students understand how the arts have played a dramatic role in cultural development and history. Students emerge with a deeper overall appreciation of the arts, past and present.
Students in preschool through fifth grade receive instruction in Spanish.
Students in preschool through fifth grade participate in a 30-minute physical education class daily.
